Don’t Let an Unexpected Cavity Derail Your Invisalign Treatment

One of the most common misconceptions about Invisalign is that the aligners act as a barrier that shields your teeth from decay. In reality, the opposite is true; the trays can actually trap bacteria, food particles, and sugar against your enamel if you’re not careful! But the good news is that with a little awareness and the right habits, you can protect your smile from start to finish of your orthodontic journey. Here’s what you need to know.

How Cavities Can Still Form During Invisalign Treatment

Simply put, the same conditions that cause cavities under normal circumstances are amplified when aligners are involved. Invisalign covers your teeth for 20 to 22 hours a day, which creates a warm, enclosed environment between the aligners and your teeth that bacteria love. If food residue or sugary drinks come into contact with your teeth before you put your aligners back in, or if you put them in over unclean teeth, that bacteria gets locked in close contact with your enamel for hours at a time.

Cavities aren’t always obvious, but there are early warning signs to watch for. The biggest one is tooth sensitivity, especially to hot, cold, or sweet foods. You might also notice a dull ache, a visible dark spot on the surface of a tooth, or a rough texture when you run your tongue across your enamel.

If you notice any of these symptoms during your Invisalign treatment, know that having your smile evaluated early gives you the best chance of addressing the issue with a minimally invasive solution. It also means you’re less likely to experience a setback with your orthodontic journey!

Tips for Preventing Cavities During Invisalign

Whether you wear Invisalign or not, preventing cavities is always easier than treating them. Here are the best habits for keeping your teeth healthy throughout Invisalign treatment:

  • Brush after every meal. Before putting your aligners back in, always brush your teeth and floss. Never eat while wearing your Invisalign.
  • Only drink water with your aligners in. Juice, soda, coffee, and even sports drinks can introduce acids and sugar into the tight spaces between your aligners and your teeth.
  • Clean your aligners daily. Rinse them with cool water every time you remove them and use a soft-bristled brush to gently clean them before putting them back in.
  • Don’t skip your check-in appointments. Routine visits let your dental team monitor your teeth for early signs of decay and make sure your treatment is progressing as planned.

Everyone’s Invisalign journey looks different, but one constant is the threat of cavities. However, by taking a sensible approach to your dental health, decay isn’t something you’ll need to worry about!
